Jason Koon

Jason Koon: Professional Poker Player Profile

Player Background

Jason Koon is an American professional poker player who is known as one of the most accomplished and successful players to this day. He is widely regarded as one of the most consistent and elite competitors in the world. Koon remains one of the dominant players in the high stakes poker, especially in the Triton Poker Series.

He discovered poker in 2006 when he was still at West Virginia Wesleyan College, studying business administration and finance. His discovery of the game was born out of the accident he had before the track competition, which left him unable to take part in sports activities. It was his roommate who opened the doors of poker to Koon and taught him Texas Hold’em. Realizing his passion for the game and the skills he had gained from it, Koon decided to pay off his medical and tuition debt of $115,000 by dedicating himself to poker and perfecting his play. So he briefly worked in insurance sales after receiving his MBA in Finance, but quit in 2008 to pursue poker full-time.

Interesting Facts

There are a lot of things that make Jason Koon an interesting and unique player, but these facts just stand out and tell a lot about him as a player:

  • He is considered the “King of Triton” – As of early 2026, he holds the record for the most Triton Poker Series titles with 12. Over half of his total career earnings, almost $35 million, have come specifically from the Triton circuit.
  • He approaches poker as any other athletic sport – Koon treats poker like an elite sport. He often brings his own food (like avocados and nuts) to the table to maintain his ketogenic diet. And he is known for his “brain biohacking” technique, which means optimizing sleep and focus to maintain an edge during 12-hour sessions.
  • He is the Ambassador of GGPoker’s Poker Integrity Council (PIC) – In 2022, Koon was appointed the Ambassador of GGPoker’s Poker Integrity Council. In this role, he helped with game security and worked to ban cheaters from the platform, which made him a “sheriff” for the high-stakes community before moving to PokerStars in 2024.

Playing style

Koon’s style has changed over time and turned him into one of the most unique players in the world.

  • He is analytical and mathematical: In the beginning of his career, Koon was more of a “trick-based” player, but eventually his playing style changed to analytical and highly theoretical. This happened after living with pro Ben Tollerene, who is known for his aggressive style.
  • His play style is stoic and professional: He is known for a disciplined, “stoic” demeanor at the table, while his focus is at maximum, and he is in control of his emotions.
  • He approaches poker like an athletic sport: We’ve already mentioned above that he takes care not only of his mind to stay sharp for the game, but also of his body, maintaining a ketogenic diet, even while playing the game.
  • He has the sense for live tells: Even though he heavily relies on Game Theory Optimal (GTO) play, he himself considers that he has an ability to pick up live physical tells. Koon states this as one of his major strengths at the table.

Career Earnings and Rankings

Koon is one of the most decorated players of poker to this day. 2025 was especially a career-defining year for him. He earned $11.1 million in total cash. He also took down the $50,000 High Roller at the 2025 WSOP for nearly $2 million. But before he reached this in his career, he had come a long way. These are his career earnings and rankings:

  • Total Live Earnings: $70,242,655 (He crossed the $70M milestone in early 2026).
  • He ranks 3rd in the All-Time Money List (Global). He currently trails only Bryn Kenney and Justin Bonomo.
  • He is 2nd in the All-Time Money List (United States). He is the second-highest earning American player of all time.
  • He is 2nd in the Triton Poker All-Time Money List with over $36.2 million in winnings from the Triton series alone.
  • He takes the 1st place as the Triton Poker Title Leader. Koon holds the all-time record with 12 Triton titles (no other player has more than 5).
  • Koon is currently ranked 37th in the Global Poker Index. His career peak was 4th place.
  • He is number 1 in the West Virginia All-Time Money List. He is the undisputed #1 player from his home state.
  • WSOP Bracelets: 2 (He won his second in 2025).
  • Best Live Cash: $3,579,836 (Triton Montenegro 2018).

Strengths and Weaknesses at the Table

One of Koon’s biggest strengths at the table is his hybrid strategy. He doesn’t merely rely on math and theoretical knowledge; he has also underlined the importance of live tells in several interviews. So he often uses GTO as his baseline game and live tells as hints for his strategy. Another strength of his playing style is his ability to adapt to the different equities and hand rankings of Hold’em, which is a primary reason for his 12 Triton titles.

When speaking of weaknesses, Koon has mentioned that when he is “dialed in,” he enters a “war state of mind”, which, on one hand, helps him fight for winning, but is also emotionally draining and tiring.

Online Poker Presence

Koon is known by the screen names JAKoon1985 at PokerStars and NovaSky at Full Tilt. He has nearly $3.5 million in recorded online tournament cashes, with these accounts.
